Ain't I a Woman?
My project *Ain’t I a Woman?* explores Black femininity and how it is perceived through technology, social media, and culture. It confronts the systemic disregard of Black women’s contributions and the stereotypes that continue to oppress them. By reimagining a world where Black women receive the respect they deserve, I created a visual and emotional testament to their beauty, strength, and cultural significance. Inspired by historical figures like Sojourner Truth and contemporary discussions of Black womanhood, the project raises questions about representation, reclamation, and the future of Black femininity.
The title references Sojourner Truth’s speech *Ain’t I a Woman?*, which remains relevant today. I also drew from Malcolm X’s statement that “the most disrespected, neglected, and unprotected person in America is the Black woman.” These words reflect the ongoing struggles Black women face in media and society. My goal is to reclaim Black femininity by challenging its historical erasure and masculinization. By centering Black women’s narratives and their relationship with technology and social media, I hope to honor their contributions and advocate for a more just future.
